Offline web browsing

At the post grad meeting today Jevon spoke about WebML, and one of the lacking areas is that of 'offline browsing', which I guess is becoming increasingly important with our increasing dependence on websites. Chris Double is a developer in NZ that is working for Mozilla in the area of 'offline-enabling' Firefox (in time for FF3 apparently).

The main links that I know of (without going to Google) are:

• Rod Druries blog titled 'Firefox3: Web Apps Game changer'. This is a very nice blog and Rod is pretty much my hero at the moment for his success in the last few years (and for that coming up in the next few years).

• Adobe Apollo

Having not googled for anything, please feel free to post comments with additional sites to visit. And just a heads up, this doesn't have the slightest crossover with my research, but I thought it was cool nonetheless. If you do like this kind of stuff, talk to Jevon.

Oh, isn't it cool the Mozilla is being developed by New Zealanders? Chris Double working on offline support, and I know of Robert O’Callahan who does the rendering engine. Who else is there.....?

Oh, while I'm at it....Planet NZTech is a highly recommended blog to add to your RSS feed reader. It features the blogs of a number of interesting NZ Tech people (which you could never tell from the name :P). It's where I go to learn about what is happening in NZ Tech these days. You might even spot my blog on the list if you look hard enough :-)

Component Contracts Prototype

Great stuff, I have merged different feeds from Yahoo (weather PN), this blog (you should be able to see THIS on the pipe), slashdot (with content filter "New Zealand") and the NZ Herald tech section. Chck it out:

The coolest thing is that the output of the pipe can be a source for another pipe (i.e., there is a rss feed at the end of the pipe).

Yet another summer job

Dear all, here is another summer job offer. Please contact me if you are interested!

This position requires probably a student that has completed 2^nd year (B+ grades or better) and has undertaken papers that gave them experience with Java programming environment. We will need a student that is motivated and able to think pretty independently – eg be comfortable with searching web for the tools/compliers they may need, and setting up the environment on a PC. There will be plenty of help available but it won’t be a hand holding situation.

The project involves editing, compiling and testing J2ME applications (mobile games). The source code is already written and tested, our project is to edit it to work on different devices.

Let me know if you think you have a suitable candidate for this work. It will be for the whole summer vacation period (10 days off at Xmas), 30 to 40 hours per week, paid at Student Job Search type rates and based in Wellington.

JUNG (Java Universal Network/Graph Framework)

I have found a very useful open source Java library that seems to be suitable for projects dealing with graph/network analysis, small world stuff and visualization.
Its called JUNG (http://jung.sourceforge.net/) , and people from UC Irvine and MS are behind it. In a nutshell, it provides a lot of graph algorithms "out of the box" including shortest path , clustering, generating graph layouts .. (see API doc for complete list: http://jung.sourceforge.net/doc/api/index.html ). It also does the anti gravity - spring based animated layout and supports custom renderers for nodes and edges, all very very easy to use.
